WHAT HAVE BEEN ACCOMPLISHED:
JMEC has been structural subconsultant to major Prime Consultants for 6 different on-call bridge seismic retrofit contracts for a total of 18 bridges for the California Department of Transportation.
For Contract 59X844, JMEC completed the seismic analysis, seismic retrofit strategy determination, seismic retrofit design, and provided construction design support services for three bridges including the Verdugo Road Separation.
The bridge is a 325-ft 5-span reinforced concrete box girders on multiple column bents. The bridge has a maximum span of 92-ft and is skewed at 55 degrees. Due to this large end skew, large diameter CIDH piles were installed to minimize rotation of the bridge. The retrofit measures included:
- Construct concrete in-fill walls with footing retrofits
- Construct 72-in diameter CIDH piles with diaphragm bolsters at abutments
